Wherein we acquire a dog.

But we'd really rather help someone else acquire this dog. I am very much the cat person.

Aaaaand Gulf Wars is back on. Mucho thanks to Lord Sebastian, the rockingest faux brother a gal could hope for. And I did say that Hajji was awesome, no?

See folks late Thursday night!

The story and words are hers, but I do believe that it needs to go viral and that as many people as possible need to get their stories out there. Only by making a noise about this can we make a change in our society. I reposted this from [livejournal.com profile] etcet 's journal.)

There is a move afoot in the nation -driven by the GOP - to repeal the new health care laws, to protect corporate interests, to defend against fear-mongering (and stupid) cries of "socialism!", and to ensure that people are forced to choose between keeping a roof over their heads or getting necessary health care.

This movement is killing people.

Think I'm overstating the fact?

Ask the friends and family of writer/reviewer Melissa Mia Hall, who died of a heart attack last week because she was so terrified of medical bills, she didn't go see a doctor who could have saved her life.

From another writer friend: One person. Not the only one. That could have been me. Yeah, I have access to insurance -- I live in New York City, which is freelancer-friendly, and have access to freelancer advocacy groups. Through them, I can pay over $400/month ($5,760/year) as a single, healthy woman, so that if I go to the hospital I'm not driven to bankruptcy. But a doctor's appointment - a routine physical - can still cost me several hundred dollars each visit. So unless something's terribly wrong? I won't go.

My husband worked for the government for 30 years. We have government employee (retired) insurance. It is the only thing of value he took away from that job. His pension is pitiful. He still works part time. My writing income has diminished drastically. Our combined income is now less than what it was before T retired fifteen years ago. Inflation has diminished it further. In the last 30 days I have racked up over $8000 in medical bills for tests and the beginning of treatment. Our co-pay is 20% after the deductible. And there is more to come. Our savings are already gone. I have the gold standard of insurance and I still can't pay all the medical bills.

Another friend lost her insurance when her husband lost his job. She couldn't afford medication and ended up bed ridden for three months at the end of over a year of no job and therefore no insurance until he found work again.

It's our responsibility. All of us, together. As a nation.

EtA: Nobody is trying to put insurance companies out of business. They will always be able to offer a better plan for a premium. We simply want to ensure that every citizen - from infant to senior citizen - doesn't have to choose between medical care, and keeping a roof over their heads, or having enough to eat.

We're trying to get this to go viral. Pass it along.

I'm going to post my story as the first comment to this post if anyone would like to read it. If anyone wants to tell their story, please tell it on your own journal and post a link in the comments. Maybe, just maybe, TPTB will listen to the slaves peons who clean their toilets before they have to clean their own.

Wherein I break my activity promise to myself, and take on yet another, which is also quite time-consuming.

Yeah. I was so fooling myself. I am unable to stick to just one thing.

EDIT: After a cool-down period and reserving a room at the Sheraton with no problems, we are set. Whew. I feel better now.

I have been on hold with the Marriott for over an hour. In the time it took for me to log on to the reservations website and get out my credit card, the rooms were all booked. I figured if I got up at 7, called, then got on the phone at 8 like the lady told me, that would make a difference.

So no rooms for Jennie and Happygoth at the Marriott for DragonCon.

If you've got extras, we need one. Bad. Last person who did this got a steak dinner and a drink out of the deal (and [livejournal.com profile] ceosanna, you're still completely awesome).

I'm going to troll the lists for open rooms, but this is what we've got at the moment. Nada.

1. That's completely not cool.
2. If you're going to steal from somebody, steal from somebody who can afford it.
3. I hate you

I don't have much to offer today, except for some wonderful, awful, beautiful machine-knitted sweaters:

German design company produces 3-D sweater.

Yep.

On the way back to work from running errands, I was delighted to be behind a fellow who was blowing bubbles out the window of his gigantic pickup truck. Had I not just fixed the keyguard on my phone (the purpose of the erranding), I would've snapped a photo. However, you'll just have to take my word for it.

Science!

Forgive Student Loans to Help the Middle Class

Peace? Bah. Marijuana? Bah. No more student loans to pay back? I can get behind that!

happygoth: (meow)

I don't normally use this journal as a soapbox. I don't normally air grievances or vent petty frustrations here.

However, I have been reading numerous articles about the bailout and I want to say this to Wall Street and the banks involved in this bailout nonsense:

[soapbox]

Were you to be lying bleeding on the street (CEOs, not the banks themselves, which aren't individuals), I would not stop to help you. I would not give you the time of day, except perhaps to stomp on you some more, hurl profanity at you, and make you feel as insignificant and uncared for as I feel upon learning that you took the bailout money, which was supposed to help all of us working fucking hard every single day to pay our bills and live at the very bottom of a middle class tax bracket (did you hear me? fucking hard. like, overtime I'm not getting paid for, and an anxiety disorder because of the stress of that work), and used it instead to pay yourselves million-dollar bonuses.

I will never see a million dollar bonus. I will never see a bonus of more than a couple of thousand dollars, if I'm lucky. And I imagine that since that bonus is a fraction of your salary, you don't really need it. With that bonus, you could probably pay off the student loans of a good percentage of my graduating class. You could help thousands of single mothers who working three and four jobs just to put food on the table, and enable them to spend more quality time with their children. You could create billions of microloans to help people in Africa emerge from poverty into a self-sustaining lifestyle (that isn't starvation and abject poverty).

And most importantly, YOU COULD ELIMINATE THE NEED FOR A FUCKING BAILOUT.

I mean, seriously. Regardless of the way the economy is heading, take a fucking pay cut, and put that bonus money back into the economy.

Because we all know who and what caused this mess in the first place. Assholes.

[/soapbox]

You know what the best part is? We're all alive to see the first non-white dude become President of the United States. When we're all wrinkled and old, we can sit back and go, "I remember when..."

HOOOOOOOOOOOOORAY!!!!!!!
(use of extra punctuation is OK in this instance)

GO OBAMA!

[and now I'm going to bed, because excited idiots are shooting guns into the air]

I have to talk to somebody about this, since nobody i know has read it (yet), and I was so utterly flabbergasted by it.

Seriously, S. Meyer. Seriously.

Did you order a size up, down, or just right? I'm a US men's size 6 (the size 6 seems to fit me better than a women's size 8).

Inquiring minds want to know...
happygoth: (Wednesday)
I started a new blog. Comment and I'll tell you the address.

I called it Knitters = Angry Mob. I imagine that if you don't already understand the title of the blog, you're probably confused and perhaps slightly annoyed, but never fear - I do have a reason (and it's a good one). Having gone to hear Stephanie Pearl McPhee talk at Knitsch this past Wednesday, and then having been inspired to blog about knitting, I found myself wondering what to call the blog. I recalled a conversation I had with Mouse and the Chicken Goddess about why it is a Bad Idea to anger knitters - this conversation was following SPM, aka the Yarn Harlot telling the assembled throng about Those Who Do Not Understand Knitting and Therefore Belittle It Much to the Chagrin of Others, or TWDNUKTBMCO, which is not the acronym she used but is the one I'm using because I forgot hers - that is, we are numerous and we all have very pointy sticks, easily transforming into an angry mob.

Therefore, knitters = angry mob. You'd do well not to anger us.

Also, I need to finish my socks. I found myself looking down at my feet, which at this moment are clad in uninteresting blue store-bought socks (with a penguin at the top only I know about because it's under my pants leg), and feeling very forlorn, since I have an exciting pair of unfinished knitted by me socks in a tote bag in my living room.

And now I know why other knitters love knitting socks so much. I understand! It's like a bolt of lightning! In the shape of blue store-bought penguin socks! Hooray!

[EDIT: I don't know why I screened the comments, so I've un-screened them. If you want yours screened, let me know.]
happygoth: (SouthPark me!)
Mostly because I'm apologizing to the Yarn Harlot for taking a photo of her while she was trying to take a photo of us in the crowd behind her Travelling Sock. I didn't see the several and quite large signs posted around the auditorium requesting that I not take photographs! I'm terribly sorry.

I also don't know why I'm posting this in here (or anywhere, for that matter), since she's not likely to read it. As far as I know, she only has a vague idea that I exist on this planet, and will therefore probably not go seek me out.

All the same, sorry.
happygoth: (cheese)
If you don't know who he is, all you others in LJ-land, go here Happy birthday, Xylo! and here
In (edit) certain Native American traditions, it's customary for birthday person to give gifts. I think we ought to re-institute this tradition (but not get rid of the current one).

No, seriously. I'll sing the birthday song, you just watch.

I am win!

I have discovered the secret of job hunting, provided you have a marketable skill:

When you go for an interview, mention another place has made an offer. Then the places you're going to interview will sweeten the deal. Also, if you're freelancing somewhere, casually mention said offer, at which point they might just make their own offer.

Chicago isn't out of the picture just yet, but we're not moving to Minneapolis. Though I liked the firm where I interviewed, I decided it wasn't the thing for me. So I'm still interviewing, and I'll be interviewing in Chicago on Tuesday (which will be awesome, I'm sure - I'm staying at the Hilton downtown). I'm a little nervous.
